Calcium gluconate is a calcium salt used primarily for the prevention and treatment of calcium deficiency. Parenteral administration of calcium gluconate is required in cases of acute hypocalcaemia and hypocalcaemic tetany. It can be administered intravenously to treat severe hyperkalaemia and magnesium sulfate overdose, as calcium acts as an antagonist to magnesium toxicity. IV injections have also been used in the treatment of acute renal, biliary, and intestinal colic. Calcium has been utilized as an inotrope during cardiac resuscitation. Additionally, it may be used to prevent hypocalcaemia in exchange transfusions and for long-term electrolyte replacement therapy.
