Maxon monofilament synthetic absorbable sutures are made from a copolymer of glycolic acid and trimethylene carbonate. They are designed for soft tissue approximation and ligation, including pediatric cardiovascular tissue where growth is expected, and peripheral vascular tissue. However, they are not intended for adult cardiovascular tissue, ophthalmic surgery, microsurgery, or neural tissue.
These sutures cause minimal acute tissue inflammation, followed by gradual encapsulation by fibrous connective tissue. Absorption occurs through hydrolysis, breaking down the suture material, which is then absorbed and metabolized by the body. Studies show tensile strength retention is approximately 80% at one week, 75% at two weeks, 65% at three weeks, 50% at four weeks, and 25% at six weeks post-implantation. Absorption begins significantly around 60 days and is nearly complete within six months.
