Maxon monofilament synthetic absorbable sutures are made from a copolymer of glycolic acid and trimethylene carbonate. These sutures are intended for general soft tissue approximation and ligation, including use in pediatric cardiovascular tissue where growth is expected, as well as in peripheral vascular tissue. They are not suitable for adult cardiovascular tissue, ophthalmic surgery, microsurgery, or neural tissue.
Maxon sutures trigger a minimal acute inflammatory response, followed by gradual encapsulation by fibrous connective tissue. The suture's tensile strength progressively decreases and is eventually absorbed through hydrolysis, where it is broken down and metabolized by the body. Studies show that at one week post-implant, Maxon sutures retain about 80% of their original strength, 75% at two weeks, 65% at three weeks, 50% at four weeks, and 25% at six weeks. The absorption process starts slowly, with minimal absorption until around the 60th day, and is generally complete within six months.
